Brett Robinson

Director of Coaching

Brett Robinson is a High Performance Athletics Coach who works with track and field athletes, lifesaving and field sports athletes of all ages.

Brett is a former athlete himself winning multiple World and Australian Beach Sprint Championships along with being runner up in the Stawell Gift. He holds an Athletics Australia Level 3 High Performance and Surf Life Saving Australia L1 Beach coaching accreditation.

Brett is the founder and Head Coach at Viking Athletics, which is a sprint and speed development program targeted at all facets of Athletics and Surf Life Saving, from grass roots to aspiring Olympians.

Based on Australia’s Gold Coast and founded by Robinson in 2009, Viking Athletics has helped deliver some of Australia’s fastest men and women, including national 100m medallists, Australian and New Zealand Relay (4 x 100, 4 x 400) Representatives, four Stawell Gift Winners, International Life Saving Representatives and dozens of World and National Life Saving medallists.

Brett is a husband and father of two up boys. He enjoys time with his family which usually involves weekend sport for the boys either taking in their Oz Tag with Miami Raptors, Basketball for Varsity Vipers & Gold Coast Basketball, AFL games with the Broadbeach Cats or Sunday nippers at North Burleigh Surf Club.

Josh Carter

Physiotherapist and HP Manager

Josh is not only a physiotherapist with a special interest in the sports and musculoskeletal area, but an accredited exercise physiologist and exercise scientist.

He brings a wealth of knowledge and ideas to the Viking Athletics team and is often responsible for many of the behind the scenes policies and procedures that add a significant advantage to our athletes.

As high performance manager he ensures that the medical and performance team around the Vikings are ticking all the boxes they need to be to ensure the athletes are performing at their best.

As well as his presence at training where Josh provides physical preparation, injury assessment and management and return to running supervision, he works closely with the QAS in the management of their athletes within our group.

Josh works privately at Surf Life Physio – a niche sports based practice in Miami on the Gold Coast.

Josh is a husband and father of a baby boy. And when he’s not working with us or looking after his family, he’s probably mowing his lawn or in the surf!

Rick Martin

Strength and conditioning coach

Rick Martin has a Diploma of Fitness and is a Level 3 Master Coach with ASCA (Australian Strength and Conditioning Association) having been a professional member of this organisation since 1991.

Rick was awarded the prestigious ASCA Coach of The Year Award for 2020. Rick is also ASCA-SIG (Special Interest Group) Gold Coast District Coordinator responsible for improving and facilitating coach education in this region. Rick has been the Strength and Conditioning Coordinator at Bond University HPTC (High Performance Training Centre) since February 2016.

Rick worked in professional sports through Asia having lived in China 3 years working with the WCBA women’s professional league (Guangdong Dolphins) and their National Team contesting the 2012 FIBA World Basketball Championships in Kaunas Lithuania.Rick was also Head Performance Coach for The Philippine Olympic Committee based in Manila 2013 preparing their National Team athletes for 23 sports competing in the 2013 South East Asia Games hosted at Nay Pyi Taw Myanmar.

Rick has worked as a paid Strength and Conditioning Consultant previously with QAS and AIS athletes in Basketball Sprint Kayak Rowing and Beach Volleyball in preparation for two Olympics and two World Championships. Rick was Strength and Conditioning Coordinator at The Southport School from 2001-2010 before leaving to work full time in Asia.

Rick has been Head Performance Coordinator the ADP (Athlete Development Program) at Varsity College for the past 4 years. From 1998-2008 Rick was part time teaching in the Faculty of Health Science at TAFE Gold Coast. Rick has been fortunate with his extensive experience having worked with a wide variety of National/International and Professional athletes both male and female through all ages successfully in a wide variety of sports.

Rick has a son studying Civil Engineering at Griffith University and a daughter just completed her Diploma of Early Child Care working full time in that profession.
